BOOTSTRAP NOTES
Honest reflections from building Bootstrap Insider — one decision, one experiment, one lesson at a time.
Sent every Sunday.
I recently met Jacob Beautemps at the Innovation Day 2025 in Darmstadt, the founder and face behind Breaking Lab, one of Germany’s most successful science communication channels.
With more than 700,000 YouTube subscribers, Jacob and his team turn complex research, physics, and technology topics into content that’s actually fun to watch.
His videos reach millions, and his mission is simple but powerful: make science understandable for everyone.
What impressed me most wasn’t just his reach — it was how much craft goes into clarity.
Jacob spends hours refining storylines, visuals, and metaphors until they spark genuine understanding.
And while he does that for science, I realized the same challenge applies to every founder trying to explain a complex product.
“People just don’t get it.”
That’s what many founders say when they talk about their product.
They’ve built something brilliant — but the world doesn’t seem to understand it.
At the Innovation Day in Darmstadt, Jacob shared how he breaks down difficult concepts: start with a strong hook, visualize the unseen, connect emotionally, and ask better questions.
The more I listened, the more I thought — this is the blueprint for every startup pitch, sales conversation, or landing page.
When your idea is complex, communication isn’t a nice-to-have.
It’s your make-or-break skill.
Jacob’s approach to science communication is really a masterclass in business storytelling:
→ Start with a strong hook to make people care.
→ Use visuals to make abstract ideas tangible.
→ Tap into emotions to keep attention.
→ Ask good questions — because curiosity builds connection.
Your product doesn’t need to be simpler.
Your story does.
If people don’t understand what you do, they can’t value it.
If they don’t feel it, they won’t remember it.
So next time you pitch your startup, explain your feature, or write your website copy —
don’t start with what it does.
Start with why it matters.
Because clarity isn’t just communication.
It’s your competitive advantage.
